Michigan Fair Elections Publishes and Distributes
Handy Summary of State’s Election Laws
Solid, convenient info … and just in the nick of time!
STOCKBRIDGE, Mich. — With only a few weeks remaining before the 2024 general election day, citizen interest in voting and elections is at its height. Clerk offices are bustling with final election details. Perfect timing for Michigan Fair Elections Institute (MFEI) to release Michigan Election Law Summary and FAQs, a 48-page, plain-spoken summary of top questions and answers about the state’s election laws.
Dedicated to the state’s clerks, election workers, and patriot volunteers who administer elections, this Everyman’s and Everywoman’s election handbook is nevertheless grounded in the highest principles of the rule of law and was reviewed by legal experts with care.
The guide, organized in three sections — “Before the polls open,” “When the polls are open,” and “After the polls close,” — is written in a familiar question and answer format, convenient for easy browsing and quick reference.
Professor William Wagner, a former federal judge, wrote one part of the Foreword. He reviewed the content for legal accuracy and praised the MFEI guide, saying it “helpfully collects and organizes this body of law for the benefit of Michigan election officials and citizens alike.” Wagner, founder of the Great Lakes Justice Center, went on to recommend the guide for legislators and judges as well.
Nationally recognized election integrity attorney Erick G. Kaardal suggested in the Foreword that the handbook should be widely replicated, writing, “Election integrity organizations in other swing states should follow Michigan Fair Election’s example.”
MFEI will be following the legal experts’ advice and making the handbook widely available, providing copies available free of charge to clerks, judges, and legislators. The handbook is also available in a free-of-charge, downloadable, PDF version on Michigan Fair Elections’ website. Printed versions of the booklet will soon be available for purchase at Barnes & Noble for $2.90 plus shipping.
MFEI analyst Frederick J. Woodward undertook the project, shepherding the content through legal and editorial reviews. Patrice Johnson, founder MFEI, says the handbook is part of the organization’s mission to help restore fair and unbiased elections in Michigan through education, local task force coalitions, and litigation. “Every eligible ballot from only eligible voters should be counted,” Johnson wrote in the preface.
The project was underwritten by a grant from Michigan Fair Elections Institute, an educational, non-profit 501(c)3 organization.
