(Stockbridge, Mich.) — Two of Michigan’s election integrity power players are joining forces to leverage their impact and influence.

Data Evaluation Election Processes (DEEP) announced its official affiliation with Michigan Fair Elections Institute (MFEI) on Thursday, at Pure Integrity Michigan Election’s weekly public meeting News@Noon.

MFEI Founder and Chair Patrice Johnson welcomed the alliance, calling it “the logical next step in building a network of election integrity citizen experts.”

Tim Mauro-Vetter, spokesperson for DEEP, says the two groups share a single vision. “Both of our groups are grassroots organizations built on dedication to election transparency and a belief in citizen participation in election processes.”

Vetter explained what his data volunteers analyze. “We are citizens overseeing the data. Our group includes people who are data experts and people who assist in data collection. We are looking at whether the election data is accurate, is it consistent? We examine chain of custody issues, asking, for example, did anyone modify the data?”

DEEP volunteers have been monitoring Michigan election data since 2021, systematically downloading Michigan’s Bureau of Elections (BOE) data on a monthly basis and documenting changes and anomalies. The BOE is part of the Secretary of State’s office, which is responsible for implementing state law to administer Michigan’s federal and state elections.

Recently, when the Secretary of State’s office was unable to provide timely data from the November 2024 general election, DEEP devised a workaround, submitting Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to all 83 county clerks and asking for the data on a county-by-county basis.

DEEP volunteers kept careful records of their contacts with the counties. Working with MFEI, DEEP developed a ranking of how responsive Michigan counties were to citizen requests for election information.

“As one might expect, there was good and bad news in the ranking,” explained Patrice Johnson, MFEI Chairman. “We found that 18 Michigan counties quickly and accurately responded to our request, but some counties outright refused to comply with transparency laws and provide the publicly-available election data.”

DEEP and MFEI have a number of shared projects in the works. “Right now MFEI is working with both DEEP and CheckMyVote.org to develop criteria for measuring how clean our voter rolls are,” Johnson said. “We know from polling this is an issue that is highly important to voters. We’ll be producing a ranking of county voter roll hygiene in the coming weeks.”

Michigan Fair Elections Institute is an educational nonprofit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to restoring fair and honest elections through education, local citizen participation, and litigation. It operates local task forces in approximately half of Michigan's 83 counties.
