Safe for now, Vigilance Still Required

Kristine Christlieb, Senior Correspondent, Michigan Fair Elections | November 14, 2024

(Lansing, Mich. – November 13, 2024) The Michigan legislature’s vote on joining the National Popular Vote (NPV) Compact has been removed from this week’s agenda.

Rep. Rachelle Smit (District 43), Speaker Pro Tempore, reported the good news with a warning. “It [the vote on NPV] has been pulled from the agenda for this week. I’m still not certain it won’t pop back up.”

Patrice Johnson, founder and chair of Michigan Fair Elections, credited the temporary reprieve to patriot volunteers. “The grassroots rose up and swarmed legislators with phone calls. As of 3:00 p.m. yesterday [Tuesday], over 1700 total messages were sent from AMAC [Association of Mature American Citizens] members alone to the House.”

Johnson expressed her confidence in Michigan’s conservatives, “MFE supporters were energized and on their phones.”

Rep. Steve Carra (District 36) joined Smit in urging caution, saying, NPV may be dead for now in Michigan, “for the day at least.”

NPV isn’t just on the agenda in Michigan, there is a nationwide push for states to join the NPV Compact.

In a lengthy article published last week in the Heritage Foundation’s news outlet, The Daily Signal, Fred Lucas’ article headline was “Here’s What Would Have Happened on Election Day If Popular Vote Compact Had Been in Effect.”

Lucas reports 17 states have now agreed to the compact which commits them to “allocate their electoral votes to whichever presidential candidate wins the national popular vote – regardless of which candidate wins a majority of the state’s vote.”

Lucas describes the scenario under the compact. Since Harris won all 17 of the states plus D.C. that are now part of the compact, those states and D.C. would have had to give all their electoral votes to Trump.

“It’s impossible to underestimate the impact the NPV Compact would have on federal elections,” Johnson said. “We have to keep up the pressure.”
